
Rwanda is a landlocked country of about 26,000 square kilometres. It is bordered by Uganda to the North, D.R. Congo to the West, Tanzania to the East and Burundi to the South. The country ranges in altitude from 950m at the Rusizi River to the top of the Karisimbi Volcano at 4,519m. It has almost 1,400 square kilometres of lakes and rivers. Known as the land of a thousand hills, Rwanda is the Switzerland of Africa.
With 8 million citizrns, Rwanda is the most densely populated country in Africa. The official languages are Kinyarwanda, French and English, although Kiswahili is also widely used in commerical centres. The currency is the Rwandan franc and the capital is Kigali, which is reputed to be one of the safest capital in the world. The country has recovered well fromt he tragic events of 1994.
Agriculture is the main sector of the economy, with production of coffee, tea, pyrethrum (insecticide made from chrysanthemums), bananas, beans, sorghum, potatoes and livestock.
